The Government of Lesotho signed an addendum to the Financing Agreement, for the Support of Social Protection in Lesotho with the European Union (EU) in Maseru yesterday.

At the event the Minister of Finance Dr Moeketsi Majoro, said the Ministry of Social Development is engaged in a great task of expanding its responsibility, of helping the needy families in Lesotho.

He said there are about 300 000 needy families in Lesotho, which the Government of Lesotho has to support.

He explained that the Minister of Social Development Honorable ‘Matebatso Doti, is visiting the needy families and the plan is that she must reach out to all those families.

Dr Majoro further pointed out that with the financial support from European Union (EU), they gathered in Maseru yesterday to sign the financing agreement of M106m, which will support the Ministry of Social Development in helping the needy families in Lesotho.

In her remarks Honorable Doti indicated that the increase in funding, will be utilized to support the implementation of National Information System for Social Assistance (NISSA).

She said the funding will assist the Government to roll out NISSA coverage, from 230 000 to 350 000 in the coming years.

The Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation in Lesotho Mr Markus Theobald, said the solidarity with the neediest people of Lesotho is one of the foundations on which the European house is build, and a value of European citizens which the EU promotes globally.
