Office of the United Nations (UN) resident coordinator in Lesotho, donated the Biometric Identity Management System (BIMS) and a printer to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Maseru yesterday.

Speaking on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator Mr Alexandro Telo, said the system will assist Ministry of Home Affairs to rapidly register refugees, de-duplicate and verify details of their identity documents, ensuring that the right people receive assistance where and when needed.

He further said after registration the names and identity details of refugees, will be registered in the UN refugees registration system.

At the event the Minister of Home Affairs Honorable Tsukutlane Au, expressed his gratitude to UN for the system, saying it will help curb corruption in the process of producing identity documents.

He also said the system will be important in bringing developments and sharing of skills in Lesotho, even though on the other hand accepting refugees poses challenges to security agencies in many countries.

Honorable Au also encouraged countries to be vigilant when accepting refugees, as it is important for any country to know people who enter its border gates.
