Chief justice says preparation is key

Chief Justice Soakoane Sakoane has on Monday advised newly admitted lawyers to always come to court prepared, indicating that preparation is key.

When addressing them following their admissions, he told them that they are now officers of the court.  He encouraged them to keep on reading and keep abreast of the law. He urged them to have rules and laws with them on all occasions when they appear before the court.

The Chief Justice urged the lawyers to be careful of what they do at all times, adding that they must not forget the law.  He stated that a lot of lawyers have run into trouble because they do not want to follow the law and he urged them to always demand all information and documents from clients when they get a brief.

He warned them against doing the work of attorneys saying that will be professional misconduct. Sakoane pointed out that they are advocates therefore appear on instruction by attorneys. He emphasised that they must stick to their lane.

Moreover, The Chief Justice further warned the newly admitted advocates against running trust funds lest they get entangled with money laundering. He said they must be very careful when handling clients’ monies adding that money is tempting.

The Chief Justice also encouraged them to learn from senior lawyers and not be reluctant to seek guidance, emphasizing that presenting themselves as senior lawyers when they are juniors, that would be fraud. He concluded by wishing them success in their professional journey.

These lawyers who became members of the learned profession are Advocates ‘Masepiriti Kaphe and ‘Manthakoana Ramakhale while Mr. Shale Shale was enrolled as an Attorney. They each took an oath to serve the courts of Lesotho according to the best of their knowledge and ability.
