A reduction in the rate of crime and issues related to gangsterism are reported to be occurring at a low rate in the areas of Kobalabata and Naleli.

This emerged in an exclusive interview with the Area Chief of Koalabata Chieftainess 'Makhomo Makoanyane on Monday. In this interview, Chietainess Makonanyane indicated that this comes after the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) embarked on an initiative to take in youth into boot camps to help youth with bringing back the core values and morals of Basotho.

She mentioned that she learned there were some gaps that needed to be filled and such youth needed to understand that they should feel for other people, be patriotic and understand the importance of leadership, loyalty, dedication, respect, selflessness, honour, integrity and personal courage.

Chieftainess Makoanyane mentioned that the younger generation do not care about other people except themselves, hence there are gangs that violate other people so such initiatives are a way of trying to bring back the right image of humanity.

She however stated that as the one of the people who have witnessed the importance of the boot camp, she believes with this pilot project, parents and government leaders will support this initiative going forward and will have more participants.

She therefore pleaded with those who have influence in transforming the schools curriculum to advise the ministry of education to bring back history lessons in schools so that the younger generation would know where they come from.

The first-ever Lesotho Defence Force Youth Development Programme (LDF YDP) saw its passout in February 2022 which had an intake of about 200 participants and has currently been an ongoing initiative which the LDF is holding for youth at least every quarter of a year.
