Gauteng police on Friday arrested five men suspected of carrying out cash-in-transit robberies and courier vehicle robberies.
Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the men (aged between 30 and 38) were arrested in Emndeni, Soweto.

Masondo said the group was allegedly on their way to commit a robbery when the Crime Intelligence and Tactical Response Team pounced.

Authorities confiscated three rifles, a pistol, magazines loaded with ammunition, a signal-jammer and two cars.

He said the BMW and Hyundai H100 bakkie they were travelling in were reported hijacked in Sandton and Linden respectively this year.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela commended the police for the arrest.

"I am pleased with the manner in which the police handled this information and arrested the suspects before they could commit another crime. The firearms will be sent for ballistic tests, and suspects will be profiled to establish the crimes they were involved in," he said.

Masondo said the group would soon appear in court for conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of suspected hijacked motor vehicles.
