Maseru __ The government through the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has promised to intervene about the pending issue of fee structure at Lesotho College of Education (LCE) that has threatened students’ future.
Professor Ntoi Rapapa said this to Parliamentarians on Wednesday after a Member of Parliament for 'Makhoroana, Mr. Ts'itso Cheba asked for government's intervention through Parliament, indicating the institution is Lesotho's pride that has changed the lives of many.
Minister Rapapa highlighted that the government is working on this issue, stating that since 2014-2015, they have established LCE's failure to comply or pay Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) income tax.
He alluded that the college owes over M90 million to RSL, saying it is unacceptable that an autonomous institution led by its Council fails to comply with legal matters.
"Forensic audit will therefore be conducted to establish exactly what happened so as to report back." he stressed.
Meanwhile, Mr. Cheba shared findings on behalf of the Social Cluster Committee in relation to the issue, saying urgent motion is in this manner meant to secure the future and prosperity of students as the case has also been in court.
In conclusion, he said it is worrying that the government through the National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS) is unable to pay and adhere to local fee structures when institutions make adjustments yet pay for students studying outside the country.
