GOVERNMENT SHOULD REDUCE INMATES’S SENTENCES
Government should reduce inmates’s sentences
08 October 2024 | 08:52

The bicentennial should not exclude the inmates in upholding rebirth, reflection and transformation, Crime Prevention, Rehabilitation and Reintegration of EX-Offenders (CRROA) Executive Director Mr. Nkalimeng Mothobi has said.

Mothobi said if the country celebrates unity, peace, love and reconciliation, the Principles of King Moshoeshoe I should apply to all, including the inmates.

He said it is with this regard that the association has written and pleaded with the government through the Minister of Law and Justice to reduce one third of sentences of every inmate to promote reconciliation between the inmates, victims of crime and the entire nation.

However, Mothobi also calls for a release of inmates with mental illness who have since been kept at the Forensic department within Mohlomi hospital. He added that inmates, whose cases have since been postponed in courts of law and failing to be heard, be granted bail instead of being kept in prison without being sentenced.

He concluded by reminding the nation that King Moshoeshoe I promoted peace, unity and reconciliation to the extent that he forgave and reconciled with cannibals, thus calling on the government to consider the above.
