The Improving Adaptive Capacity of Vulnerable and Food Insecure Population in Lesotho project, (IACOV) has held a Climate Change Integration workshop for both primary and high school teachers.
IACOV's Communications Manager Ms. Rorisang Kurubally stated that after coming to a realization that climate change has become a global concern, they approached the Ministry of Education and Training and were given curriculum experts to assist them on how well they could integrate climate change in the school curriculum.
Kurubally highlighted that the aim is to take the issue to non formal education schools, citing that herd boys also get hit hard by impact of climate change, hence the need to mainstream the topic, for socio behavioural change.
On the other hand, Chairman of National Climate Committee in Lesotho, and also an officer heading technical team working on integrating climate change in schools, Mr. Mofihli Phaqane, noted that they are working hand in hand with teachers to ensure that they understand how to integrate climate change with subjects as they teach learners.
Mr. Phaqane stated that they have brought together 41 schools inclusive of primary and high schools, and concluded by stating that the task is not going to be difficult for teachers, citing the Curriculum Development Centre has introduced climate change issues, therefore teachers are already familiar with integration.
One of the participants 'Mabafokeng Molise articulated that in the curriculum, there are concepts which will allow teachers to integrate climate change issues, noting they will have to come up with strategies to make this initiative a success.
