After spending eight months in India due to ill-health, the Principal
Chief of Thaba-Bosiu, Chief Khoabane Theko is back in the country. The
Chief who celebrated his 67th birthday last week told the Agency in an
interview he landed in the country on Monday. He alluded that he is
glad to be back home, indicating he is recovering and that there is hope
in the land of the living.
The opinion leader and Parliamentarian who is outspokenly known
locally for participating in issues affecting the society he leads said he
brings messages of hope and support to Basotho prior Basotho’s 60
years’ golden jubilee independence. He said even though the Mountain
Kingdom is celebrating this milestone Basotho should introspect, calling
each to establish their role in building the ‘Lesotho We Want.’
Chief Khoabane said the celebration is coming at the time when the
country is going through various challenges that include poverty and
hunger, gender-based violence and abuse in its different forms
appealing to all, particularly leaders to unite and ensure that these
challenges are tackled. Meanwhile, he pointed that going forward the
need to work harder and collectively, making sure that Basotho are

able to produce enough food and fend for their families as well as the
nation at large is crucial.
Talking about issues of gender-based violence, he appealed to male
counterparts to take care of all females, especially during this
important month (August) where women are being celebrated and
beyond, labelling gender-based violence as a factor depriving people
the right to life. Talking to politicians, he mentioned that political
conflict has cost this country a lot, leaving Basotho deprived of peace,
advising them (politicians) towards preserving the country’s political
status in all ways.
Lesotho gained her independence from the British on October 04, 1966.
Reports from the office of Home Affairs have shown that events leading
to 60 years independence celebration are unfolding.
