Maseru, May 27 — In a bid to generate income while addressing food insecurity among vulnerable communities, the Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) has embarked on a grain production initiative at Mpharane Lekhalong, where crops are currently being harvested.
In an interview with the Agency, LRCS Branch Manager Ms. Mats’eliso Celina Thahanyane said the initiative was introduced in response to budget constraints faced by the organisation. She explained that part of the harvest will be distributed to vulnerable households, while the remainder will be sold to raise funds for other basic needs of disadvantaged community members.
Ms. Thahanyane indicated that the organisation identifies vulnerable households through reports from Regional Committees and during community outreach activities linked to other office programmes. She noted that the farming initiative is already producing positive results in supporting needy families.
Meanwhile, volunteer Chieftainess ’Maneo Makhakhe, who provided the farmland, said the field was spacious enough to allow the production of sorghum and beans on another section of the land. She said she willingly offered the field to LRCS as part of giving back to the community under her leadership.
Chieftainess Makhakhe commended LRCS for its efforts to support vulnerable groups and appealed to community members with unused farmland to lend it for similar initiatives aimed at fighting food insecurity.
