The Ministry of Law, Constitutional Affairs and Human Rights through the Human Rights Unit, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training, has planned to establish Human Rights clubs in schools with the support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), under the progress which is in place between the Unit and UNDP.
The Ministry of Law reports that it has been agreed that this project be piloted in ten schools in Maseru, which will be easy to monitor then later unfold to other districts.
It further indicates that the criteria used in the selection of the schools, were those which teach Development Studies and History.
The ministry says on April 2018 a preparatory meeting with teachers from the ten identified schools was held, in which it was agreed that there should be training of trainers for both teachers and students separately.
The overall objective for the workshop is to educate teachers on basic human rights, and how these are inter-related to their everyday work.
The workshop will focus on issues including promoting respect of gender equality among children, and empowering them through active citizenship.
