QACHA’S NEK FARMERS GEAR UP TO PLANT

Qacha’s Nek __ In the heart of Qacha’s Nek, the ongoing snowfall has sparked renewed hope among grain and farmers who are eager to turn their fortunes around with the planting season.

After a prolonged drought that left the soil hard and unyielding, this unexpected moisture presents a critical opportunity for farmers to sow seeds and nurture their crops.

Speaking to the Agency, Mrs. ’Mampai Mokone, District Crop Production Officer, emphasizes the importance of this moment. “The snow has provided essential moisture, making it easier for farmers to plough,” she explained.

Farmers who had previously struggled with dry soil now find themselves poised to take action.

Many are already gearing up to plant seeds they’ve long bought. However, the challenges of supply shortages loom large. “Some seeds have run out due to recent demand,” Mrs. Mokone noted. Key varieties like Pannar 12 and FC-08 have seen dwindling stocks, with only a limited number of potato bags (61 out of 620) remaining in the government store.

Amid these challenges, local farmer Mr. Tanki is optimistic. “This is our chance,” he said, adding “With this snow, we have a second chance.”

The snowfall may have disrupted some livelihoods, but it has also revived the spirit of possibility among the farmers of Qacha’s Nek. In the coming weeks, as they till the soil and sow their seeds, they hold onto the hope that a bountiful harvest awaits.
