Maseru, July 22 -- Speaker of the National Assembly Mr. Tlohang Sekhamane urges Members of Parliament (MPs) to stop pointing fingers at one another but to enact laws which will curb the killings amongst Basotho using firearms.

Mr. Sekhamane said this in the National Assembly in a response to a point of order raised by Matelile Constituency legislator Mr. Maimane Maphathe in the National Assembly on Monday.

He said all the Members have been elected into the House to serve the electorate in their respective villages, citing that the community in general is looking up to the members to enact laws that will improve the quality of their lives.

Mr. Sekhamane said pointing fingers at the Government that is not doing enough to protect the general public while people are continuing to die through the barrel of a gun will not help matters.

“This is a serious matter that needs all the members to enact laws which will curb the escalating killings in this country,” he stressed.

Mr. Maphathe had stood up with a point of order saying how long will the government act on the killings in the country.

He said the killings using illegal firearms are on the rise, saying if not controlled, they will spread even to the politicians themselves.

Mr. Maphathe made an example of opposition leader for the Republicans party in US, Mr Donald Trump, saying he was attacked by his assailant while addressing his followers in a political rally and feared that the same thing might happen to the politicians in Lesotho.

“These people are heavily armed with rifles while ordinary people are not armed and are soft targets,” he lamented.

He said the killings with illegal firearms started in the Mafeteng district but spread to Leribe and Berea even in other parts of the country.

The latest killings with illegal firearms were done to a Famo artist known as Khopolo Kholuoe and a journalist Pulane Macheli who were gunned down by unknown assailants at MASOWE in Maseru on Saturday.
