Mrs Mathulo Mokati a proud and assertive Mosotho farmer says Basotho farmers can feed their people; this she declared yesterday in a dialogue with Harvest fm when confirming the occurance of what SADP her sponsor calls Field Day due on Friday this week at the grounds of her small scale farm in Mmathata’s khomokhwana village near Maputsoe .
She said she calls this day Market Day owing to the fact that it will be an opportunity for her to showcase her production, pointing that her yield of 2500 heads of cabbage this winter and 50 trays of eggs a day from her brood of layers is a SADP sponsored achievement which received in 2016. She stressed that SADP has not only supported her but influenced her to work hard adding that this year the project is taking it’s final stretch by monitoring her progress.
It is in this dialogue that she highlighted the prevalent need for financial aid to help Basotho farmers grow to a level at which they can wean retailers from the custom of importing produce from abroad ,which she said is eroding Lesotho ‘s economy into South Africa, hence throttling the development of Lesotho ‘s agricultural sector let alone the country‘s economic growth.
She reiterated that laziness and lack of financial backing impede the advancement of agriculture in Lesotho sampling that South Africa braces and sponsors its farmers
Nevertheless she acknowledged that Basotho farmers possess potential to be independent and reach greater heights, pressing that this is highly possible if they could be granted financial prop
She announced that her dream is to see Basotho farmers providing enough and healthy produce for their country, under healthy ,legitimate and hopefully under organic practices expressing that at present the nation consumes food which no one is sure of how it has been produced .
