Qacha’s Nek __ A six-year-old boy tragically lost his life in Qhoalinyane, Ha Letsooa, on December 02, 2024 after a 16-year-old allegedly rolled a rock from a steep slope, striking the younger child and killing him instantly.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. at Ts'epeng pasture, where the two children were herding livestock.
In an interview with the Agency, Detective Sub-Inspector Thabo Setenane, Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Manager at Qacha’s Nek Police Station, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
"Once complete, the suspect will appear in court accompanied by a parent or guardian," he stated.
Detective Setenane urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility for their children’s safety. “Children should always be accompanied by an elder. If an adult had been present, this tragedy could have been avoided,” he emphasized.
The incident highlights the harsh realities faced by children in mountainous areas like Qacha’s Nek, where many are burdened with herding responsibilities instead of enjoying the freedom of childhood.
While some children take up this work voluntarily due to economic hardship, others are forced into it by their families.
This tragic event calls for renewed efforts to protect children and address the challenges they face in rural communities.
