URBAN COUNCIL SENSITIZES THE PUBLIC ON LAND ACT
URBAN COUNCIL SENSITIZES THE PUBLIC ON LAND ACT
22 May 2025 | 11:00

Urban Council held its last public gathering for the Checha and Salang communities on the 2010 Land Act, with the objective of sensitizing people on land usage. Addressing the public, the Urban Council Town Clerk, Mrs. Mothontsi Lekau, stated that the purpose of the ongoing public gathering was to educate the public on the Land Act and what is required of them to legally own land. She urged the community to consult their offices for a better understanding, especially for cases that affect individuals. She said it is everyone;s responsibility to respect the law, as there are laws that regulate land.

The Physical Planner Mr. Rets;elisitsoe Selometsi, urged the community to stop selling agricultural land and transforming it into residential land without following the proper procedures. He explained that, for one to transform the land, they need to write to the Minister of Local Government, stating valid reasons for the transformation.

The Salang and Checha communities seemed dissatisfied with the answers provided, saying it is too late for the council to educate them since a lot of damage has occurred. They also complained about the expensive services required, such as finding a surveyor to obtain the lease, as some are not employed. In closing, the Salang chief urged that services not be delayed, as that forces people to act impatiently and build without permits.
