Lack of recognition and enough credit in the music industry is reported to be one of the greatest challenges that women face in the music industry.

This emerged at the 'Women in Music' round table that was hosted by the American Embassy in Maseru on Monday.

The guest speaker at this event, who is a musician from Canada and currently based in France Ms. Melissa Laveaux said that lack of support from black parents still perceiving music as a low-income career is still also one of the challenges that hinders the progression of music for women especially in black communities.

She said that unfair judgements that many women in music go through should be one of the best criticism that could help women push and make it through the industry.

Meanwhile, a local artist Ms. Mookho Moqhali said that music can be used as a healer and comforter for most people which in Lesotho a great challenge is still being taken for granted over international artists.

She said that the other issue is still that of low remuneration that they still get as compared to that of male artists in the country.

She however mentioned that the need for a music academy in Lesotho still remain a great challenge which needs to be addressed as music can be used also a way of luring youth from substance abuse.

On the other hand, Ms. Nthabiseng Mohanela mentioned that criticism coming from other platforms where they mostly post their music has become one of the issues that they are faced with in the industry.

Speaking in terms of music as an advocacy for social change, Ms. Mohanela said that music can be used as a tool on issues surrounding culture, Norms and language which can be used by even the future generation.

She however advised that music should be given a chance to be taught in schools as when well nurtured can be a good career path.

Creation of networking spaces and mentorship are reported to be some of the measures that can be implemented to bring the music career for women into a greater space.
