LAA AND LHLDC HIGHLIGHT LEASE OWNERSHIP AS LAND SECURITY SOLUTION
LAA and LHLDC highlight lease ownership as land security solution

The Land Administrative Authority (LAA) and the Lesotho Housing and Land Development Corporation (LHLDC) have emphasized the importance of holding a valid land lease, warning that failing to do so puts families at risk of disputes, financial difficulties and housing insecurity.

Speaking during a back-to-school event held in Teyateyaneng on Monday, LAA Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Malichaba Lekhoaba said a lease is a legal proof of land ownership and protects property rights.

She explained that a registered lease can also be used as collateral when applying for loans, giving landowners access to financial support. Mrs. Lekhoaba further urged Basotho to register their sites and stop building on agricultural land, noting that such practices threaten food production.

Echoing the same sentiments, LHLDC Managing Director Mrs. 'Malesekele Matekane said formal land leases help prevent inheritance disputes after a property owner’s death.

She said proper documentation ensures that children are not left homeless due to conflicts with extended family members over land ownership.

Lesotho has an increased number of land disputes and buildings on farmland due to the fact that many sites are not registered and lack leases. Authorities are raising awareness about proper land registration.
