Russia has struck Kyiv after a three-day pause in attacks on the Ukrainian and Russian capitals expired, following a visit by two US envoys that yielded no tangible progress towards ending the more than four-year war.

Ukraine’s air force said on Tuesday it had downed 142 drones, 31 of 32 cruise missiles, and two ballistic missiles launched by Russia. It did not disclose how many ballistic missiles had been used in the attack.

At least two people were killed and 10 others wounded in the Russian air raids on Ukraine’s capital, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

He reported that the strikes caused damage in the city’s Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi, Podilskyi, Shevchenkivskyi and Solomianskyi districts.

Drones hit buildings in Kyiv as well as in the Boryspil and Fastiv districts on the outskirts of the city, according to Ukraine’s emergency services.

Ukraine criticised Russia for launching attacks so soon after US President Donald Trump’s envoys – Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner – visited both countries’ capitals.

“The moment the US president’s peace envoys left, [President Vladimir] Putin launched another massive, horrific attack against Kyiv,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on social media, adding: “His ballistic missiles speak louder than his words on diplomacy.”

Following the attacks in Ukraine, Russian regional Governor Roman Busargin said a Ukrainian drone attack hit civilian infrastructure in Saratov, nearly 1,000km (621 miles) from Moscow, injuring several people.

At least one person was killed in a separate Ukrainian attack on the Russian town of Starodub in the border area of the Bryansk region, according to Yegor Kovalchuk, the region’s acting governor.

At least two people were killed and one person was wounded in a Ukrainian attack on the Crimean Peninsula, Moscow-appointed regional Governor Sergei Aksyonov said.

Russia and Ukraine pledged to halt strikes on each other’s capitals for three days as Washington dispatched envoys to Moscow and Kyiv. However, fighting continued elsewhere.

Attacks paused after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin announced the partial ceasefire during the US envoys’ visits to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend.

Russia’s state news agency TASS confirmed that the three-day suspension Putin had ordered for his forces expired on Monday evening local time.

Witkoff and Kushner held talks with officials in Moscow and Kyiv regarding ending the war. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov called the meeting, which lasted more than three hours in Moscow on Saturday, “highly useful”.
