Maseru, March 10 – As Commonwealth nations commemorate Commonwealth Day under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” the Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC) has called for greater collaboration in sport to create opportunities for athletes and promote women’s participation in leadership.
Speaking during the commemoration, LNOC Vice President for Finance and Team Lesotho Chef de Mission for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, United Kingdom, Ms. Mamots'abi Lekhabunyane said the day serves as a reminder of the power of unity and shared purpose among Commonwealth nations.
She noted that sport continues to play a critical role in bringing people together while creating platforms for athletes to develop their talent and proudly represent their countries on the international stage.
“As Team Lesotho Chef de Mission for the Commonwealth Games, I have the privilege of witnessing how sport unites people and unlocks opportunities for athletes to grow and compete while flying their national flag high,” she said.
Ms. Lekhabunyane further highlighted that this year’s observance of Commonwealth Day coincides with the global commemoration of International Women’s Day, emphasising the need to recognise and support the growing role of women in sport and leadership across the Commonwealth.
She said women across Commonwealth nations continue to break barriers, inspire communities and pave the way for future generations of girls who aspire to participate in sport at all levels.
Ms. Lekhabunyane therefore encouraged stakeholders to continue working together to create inclusive pathways that empower women and girls while expanding opportunities through sport.
She added that strengthening cooperation among Commonwealth countries would contribute to building a stronger sporting community and a more prosperous Commonwealth.
Commonwealth of Nations observes Commonwealth Day annually, bringing together member states to celebrate shared values such as democracy, development and cooperation.
