The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) in collaboration with the Department of Traffic and Transport and taxi associations announced their arrangement to work together to impound public transport taxis serving on the roads without legal documents, and to close illegal bus stop areas nationwide.

Speaking in Maseru yesterday, the taxi associations spokesperson Mr Lebohang Moea said they are aware of the increasing traffic in Maseru caused by the undocumented taxis, which also created many illegal bus stop areas in the city.

He said these taxis committed many criminal offences including the killing of people, and as the owners of legal taxis they reported this matter to the police to seek help.

In his statement he explained that in their meetings they planned to work together with Maseru City Council (MCC), and start the campaign in which they will seize all unregistered and undocumented taxis from the roads and close all illegal bus stop areas.

The LMPS officer ACP Matete Lenea, said they will collaborate with members of the public and other traffic departments to stop this crime, under their Communal Policing Policy.

The traffic commissioner in the Department of Traffic and Transport Mrs. ‘Mathabo T’sosane, said during this campaign her department will register the taxis and give them the needed traff licenses and certificates.
