Department of Road Safety together with the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) and Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) reviewed their progress in the Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign, in Maseru on Monday the 13th January 2020.

The campaign was launched on the 10th December 2019, and was officially closed on the 11th January 2020.

The director of Department of Road Safety Dr. Kinini Matthews said road safety is a mayor issue globally, and in 2011 the United Nations (UN) launched this campaign in all its member states.

She said UN indicates that currently more than 1034 million people die in road accidents every year globally.

She said UN is also worried that between 2011 and 2020, they failed to reduce by half cases of 1500 million people, who die in road accidents every year worldwide.

Matthews further stated that studies found that the number of people, who die in road accidents in this decade, is higher than the number of people killed by Malaria and TB added together.

She also said UN will have another conference in Sweden from the 19th to the 20th February 2020 to officially close the 2011/2020 Decade of Road Safety campaign.

In her remarks Matthews articulated that now that UN is aware that the whole world failed in issues of road safety they are given what is called Road Safety Post 2020 to 2030.
