Thirty-two political parties signed Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) code of conduct at an event held in Maseru on yesterday.

They signed before Christian Council of Lesotho (CCL) and the media prior to September 29, local government elections. IEC Commissioner, Mr. Ts'oeu Petlane said the signing signals parties’ commitment to free, fair and peaceful elections. Therefore during campaigns, IEC aspires for a process that does not violate others’ rights.

He indicated that this document outlines among others conduct during elections, expressing hope that the signing before moral leaders - CCL and the media, will go a long way in attaining intended results.

Sharing similar sentiments, IEC Chairperson, Mr. Mphasa Mokhochane added that these elections are held six years after 2017, thus given a year extension due to macro external factors, he said announcement of candidates to contest the upcoming elections will be on July 27th.

On behalf of political parties, Democratic Congress Leader, Mr. Mathibeli Mokhothu affirmed parties’ commitment towards successful implementation of the code, urging IEC to ensure clean voters list to minimise complaints during elections.
