COURT CASE DIRECTLY AFFECTING MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE -SEKHAMANE
17 October 2023 | 09:12

Speaker of the National Assembly Mr. Tlohang Sekhamane says the House will not debate on the motion of no confidence due to the court case in the courts of law which is directly challenging the same motion. Mr. Sekhamane made this ruling after suspending the day’s sitting of the National Assembly in order to study if the case does not affect the day’s business. He made an example of similar cases which were also not debated in the National Assembly

after Mr. Kanaenolo Boloetse challenged the reinstatement of the Eleventh Amendment to the constitution as well as Mr. Nkaku Kabi and Mr. Tefo Mapesela both challenged the House’s special meeting reconvened to deal with the reforms processes earlier this year.

Mr. Sekhamane said the House was unable to deal with those motions as they were sub judice and that likewise, the motion of no confidence will not be debated up until the court has pronounced itself accordingly. However, he promised that once the Court has pronounced itself, he will give the motion a priority for it to be debated in the National Assembly.

Some of the Government MPs burst into the party’s political songs considering the ruling as a temporary victory for them. Some of the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) followers clad in the party regalia and holding placards, were seen along the road from the New Parliament building singing and dancing in support of the government led by RFP leader Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane.Basotho National Party (BNP) leader Mr. Machesetsa Mofomobe filed the motion seconded by the Makhaleng legislator Mr. Mootsi Lehata.

In the motion, they cited that they long longer have confidence in His Majesty’s Government led by Mr. Matakena and therefore recommended the name of opposition and Democratic Congress (DC) Leader Mr. Mathibeli Mokhothu.   They parked the cars they were traveling in along the road, blocking easy movement of the MPs from parliament. The House will reconvene on Tuesday at 2.30 in the afternoon.
