The Lesotho Defence Force has issued a plea to farmers, urging them to pay their shepherds promptly to maintain positive relations between the two parties. In an interview, Lieutenant (Lt.) Moeketse Letsepe emphasized that certain incidents of stock theft are a result of farmers failing to fulfil their agreed means of remuneration arranged with shepherds.

Lt. Letsepe has observed that many farmers make agreements with shepherds to compensate them with one of the animals they are responsible for; however, over time, some farmers neglect to honour this commitment. Consequently, the shepherds may seek employment with other farmers and even contemplate retaliatory actions, such as stealing the flock of animals therefore, implore farmers to ensure that, upon parting ways with the shepherds, there are no lingering issues that might provoke the shepherds to seek revenge.

Letsepe also stressed the importance of trust and cooperation with all security sectors, encouraging people to provide information to aid in timely assistance. Collaborative efforts between communities and security agencies are essential to combat criminal activities effectively. Member of Parliament for Mechachane No. 1, Jane Lekunya, in July this year expressed concern over the escalating issue of stock theft in his constituency. Lekunya revealed that the community faces a daily challenge of losing more than one animal to theft, with the stolen livestock often crossing the porous borders into South Africa.

This constant threat causes anxiety and fear among residents, particularly those who have not yet fallen victim to these criminals. In recent years, livestock theft has grown increasingly violent and organized, resulting in substantial economic losses for livestock owners and dire consequences for households, communities, and the nation as a whole.
