LAW SOCIETY RAISES CONCERNS OVER SECURITY FORCE STATEMENT
LAW SOCIETY RAISES CONCERNS OVER SECURITY FORCE STATEMENT
18 October 2023 | 09:46

The Law Society of Lesotho (LSL) together with the Advocates for the Supremacy of the Constitution (ASC) says the role of Security Agencies is to protect the nation and its citizens while upholding the rule of law, this they say raising concerns over the statement issued by head of security agencies regarding the recent developments in political landscape.  In an interview with Mr. Bokang Sekoka of ASC, the security forces must remain politically neutral, this neutrality is the cornerstone of a stable and democratic nation where the armed forces, police, and security agencies are committed to serving the state rather than any political interest.

He said challenging the on-going parliamentary proceedings, touching on the national reforms process, have raised serious concerns. Adding that the security forces, as bastions of national security, are entrusted with the sacred duty of preserving the integrity of our democratic processes while abstaining from political interference.  He stated that the pronouncement made by these agencies, indicating that they would obstruct any constitutional change of government in parliament, raises serious concerns about the separation of powers and the integrity of democratic process.

Adv. Tuke indicated that as the Law Society of Lesotho, they call upon the Commissioner of Police, the LDF Commander, the NSS Director General and all relevant authorities to swiftly address and rectify the situation. Upholding the Constitution of Lesotho is the supreme law of the land, and it is incumbent

upon all institutions, including the security forces, to respect and uphold its tenets. The sanctity of democracy demands that no institution, irrespective of its role, stands above the constitutional framework.
