MOKHOTLONG HAS POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE QUALITY POTATOES

Research has shown that Mokhotlong is one of the districts that can produce potatoes due to the quality of soil  and weather.Department of Agricultural Research Director Dr. Lefulesele Lebesa said this when addressing farmers, Extension Officers, and Researchers from Department of Agriculture, National University of Lesotho (NUL) as well as the Lesotho Agricultural College (LAC) during a Farmers Field Day in Mokhotlong on Friday.Dr. Lebesa said research is important and done to inform the type of crops and suitable places they can be planted for promotion of agricultural production in the country.

In Mokhotlong the day culminated in demonstration of a variety of sorghum, potatoes planted using organic manure and fertilisers. A new crop tried on Lesotho soil called Pearl Millet was also planted and shown to farmers. It looks similar to sorghum.One of the farmers Mr. Tebello Khutliso of Tlokoeng said he was happy about the event as they continue to learn everyday on how they can plant crops of good quality that can reach the market.

He encouraged other farmers to use the fields they have to plant crops and improve production in the country adding that Mokhotlong is rich in water sources that can be used for irrigation of their crops.Mr. Khutliso requested the government to support farmers who are  committed in agriculture with farming inputs to increase production for subsistence and commercial purposes.Meanwhile M1.3 billion has been proposed for the agricultural sector for the financial year 2024/2025.
